The Great V6 versus V8 Debate

Amongst particularly Classic American Car fans the debate rages whether V6 is a good choice versus V8 Engines….

It really is one of those debates that has raged for years and is particularly prominent in the UK American car market. This in the main comes because a V8 engine is a bit of a rarity for UK car owners. In the classic car market for British or European classics 4 cylinder and V6 engines are pretty common place and in the modern market 3 or 4 cylinder engines are par for the course. So the opportunity to own a V8 is truly something special. When it comes to muscle cars by definition it has to be a V8. V8’s tend to be more powerful, when you press the throttle you feel that abundant strength and power that gets the petrolheads blood pumping. As an impression goes it really is only something can be emulated with exhaust modifications on a V6 and won’t quite have the grunt. On a practical level the power and torque offered by a V8 engine is also ideal for towing and hauling.

So what of the V6 engine? Well this is definitely not something to write off. V6 have more power than your average car straight off the bat and certainly some the 90’s onwards V6’s are awesome fun to drive. Stability and handling because of this refined power is also a major bonus. One of my favourite cars as a daily driver is a the 4.0 V6 S197 Mustang’s. They have plenty of power under foot, look exactly like their true Muscle cars 5.0 V8 brothers but offer a refined drive and also fuel economy. Essentially for a daily driver they are ample and ideal. There are also some really good V6 engines. General Motors have come up with some fabulous V6 engines which includes the 3.8 V6 seen in things like the Buick Riviera and also the 4.3 Vortec V6 which is common particularly in the commercial version of things like the Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Blazer. This leads me on to the fact that many cars never came with anything other than the V6 engine as an option so to own one you have to opt for the V6 engine.

All in all, it doesn’t really matter as long as you enjoy the ride, the style and passion! We all love American Classic Cars!
